Short Course
Practical Tools for Nonresponse Bias Analysis
Presented by: Kristen Olson, Ph.D., University of Nebraska at Lincoln Jill Montaquila, Ph.D., Westat
This course is designed to help in addressing recent OMB guidelines for conducting nonresponse bias studies when response rates in surveys are less than 80 percent or there is reason to suspect that estimates are biased from nonresponse. Practical tools are described and examples are used to illustrate methods that can be used to conduct these studies. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are presented, and the value of having multiple approaches is highlighted. The need to devise strategies for nonresponse and for its analysis in the planning stage, prior to completing the survey, is emphasized.
Preliminary Program
For the 2010 conference, we are planning for sessions to be 90 minutes, and include four 15-minute presentations, a discussant, and time for questions. To accommodate the extended conference sessions, we are moving the short course to Wednesday afternoon, and starting the conference on Thursday morning.
We hope that this new schedule will offer a more dynamic conference experience to the presenters and the conference attendees. The preliminary conference schedule is shown below.

Student Paper Competition
The Odum Institute for Research in Social Science at UNC-Chapel Hill invites submissions to the 2010 James W. Prothro Student Paper Competition. The competition, held in conjunction with the Southern Association for Public Opinion Research conference, recognizes excellence in student-authored research related to public opinion and survey research, broadly defined.
A $250 award is given to the best student paper. The competition is named in honor of the late Dr. James W. Prothro, the noted political scientist who served as director of the Odum Institute from 1967 to 1973.
Article-length papers (i.e., 20-25 pages), using survey data to address theory, methods, or
specific substantive issues of interest to public opinion researchers in the areas of
business, communication, economics, journalism, marketing, political science,
psychology, sociology, survey methods, or related fields are welcome. Any student
research, undergraduate or graduate, including that derived from work on theses or
dissertations, is eligible. Papers co-authored with faculty or other non-students, however,
are not eligible.
From the papers submitted, one winner and as many honorable mentions as appropriate
may be selected for presentation to the 2010 SAPOR Conference. Questions about the
Prothro competition should be directed to Robert Agans (see below). To submit your
paper, please indicate whether you are a graduate or undergraduate student; include your
name, academic department or program, school, postal address, email address, and
telephone number; and email or mail four copies by June 30, 2010, to:
